Interested in mosaic art and design? This class will go through all you need to know to create your own designer glass mosaic for numerous home and garden applications. Mosaic artist Nicala Hicks guides you through the process of planning, tracing, cutting, adhering, grouting and polishing a mosaic as well as the various methods, applications, resources and handy tricks that come from years of experience. This glass art form is perfect for transforming personal treasures and inexpensive materials into stunning features in and out of your home as well as incredible gifts for friends and family.

Hands on:
Session #1:

• Students will learn and get comfortable with the glass cutting tools required for a simple mosaic project and find what the tools unique abilities are.
• We will sketch, plan, develop and transfer concepts onto our substrates.
• I will demonstrate common mistakes and students will have a chance to test the glass`s unique qualities before cutting our designs.
• We will cut and adhere our glass to our substrates.

Session #2:

• We will set up and grout our mosaics making sure to cover the numerous tricks and tips to make this a fail-safe and rewarding process.

Students will learn:

• Various additional glass cutting tools to use in more intricate mosaics.
• Larger scale projects – how to achieve a successful interior or exterior installation.
• What substrates you can use, where to find them and who will make them for you.
• The selections of glass available for certain applications.
• What adhesives are ideal for various glass projects.
• What applications are ideal for mosaic – we will review numerous home and garden projects.
• A number of common and unique materials to use and where to find them.
• Traditional mosaic shapes and what the modern mosaic is starting to look like.
• What the difference is between a designer, classic, or kitchy mosaic.
• How to properly gauge materials that are varying thicknesses.
• How mosaics are created industrially – machines vs. hand cut labouring
  How to use stone, glass and metal together in our mosaics.
