Very nice. My first thought seeing that is that more beadmakers should be producing finished jewelry like that and cease trying to sell just the beads. _________________ Certified Master Curmudgeon |

Actually, those beads are from Amber Van Meter at Naos Glass. I am huge fan of hers and we have become buds. I asked her to post here also but she is on Wet Canvas and LE so one more board was more than she could handle...........unfortunately.
I started out making jewelry and then got into bead making. I wanted to design what I made for my own jewelry. Trouble is I'm still learning and haven't quite gotten to the point where my beads can be used for my own designs yet.
I can make some drop dead gorgeous focals, problem is they crack on me. I haven't figured out how to cool them down to go in the blanket yet. I bead batch anneal and don't keep the kiln on all the time. I'm a conservation nut and won't use energy or water, etc. in a wasteful manner so I have to figure out how to prevent the bigger beads from cracking on me. I cried two days ago when a focal that was just drop dead gorgeous with silver and real gold decorations on it cracked and was totally ruined. I was sooooo ticked off!!!
Any advice on how to cool beads off that are a little larger in size would be greatly appreciated? _________________ Blessings, Diane

Only way I know is in a kiln.
Have you considered using your kiln to fuse the ones that crack? _________________ Certified Master Curmudgeon |

Diane, the amount of energy you are using to create a focal only to have it crack is more of a waste then if you fired up the kiln and made beads that didn't crack.

Problem is my dear, sweet, mother that NEVER complains about anything (OMG what a lie that is) pays the electric and if I used the kiln every day she would have a friggin fit. I personally feel that learning to make beads that don't crack is the way to go...........
And how would I be able to fuse the cracked ones? What temp would that have to be? I have a Chili Pepper Kiln............ _________________ Blessings, Diane

Could someone give me a schedule of a regular kiln temp and time for anneal? I don't have any info on how long it takes for say a few beads, like if I turned the kiln on every time I made beads? What temp would that be??? 950F? then down to what temp? 500F? and then how long for that?
I am trying to figure this out........... I'll post some pics of my latest focals that I'll be selling on eBay this week!! YAY!! _________________ Blessings, Diane

If you're heating up the kiln empty, ramp up the temperature as fast as it'll go.
If you're heating it up with beads in it, go 500 dph for large beads and 800 dph for small.
Beads should be heated up to 1100 then dropped FAP to 950 and held for 30 minutes to anneal - then dropped to cool enough to remove. _________________ Certified Master Curmudgeon |
