I want to make some fused glass tile using a colored glass as a base and an iridescent clear as the top layer.
How should I position the iridescent layer ?
Coated side of the glass up or down ? |

Either way works. How you chose to do it depends entirely on the look you want. If you set it with irid up, you'll get a finish that looks much like raku pottery. If you set it with irid down, the irid coating will pucker and create a pattern that many artisans prefer. The same if you fire clear over irid.
Take care to not place two different irid glasses with irid side facing each other. Irid to irid won't fuse. |

Thanks,
I'll try it with the irid coating up and see how that looks.
I'll report results in a couple of days. |

Another consideration when working with irid. If you fire with irid face up and place small elements on it expecting to melt them into the glass, the metallic irid coating severely resists letting anything melt through. |

I fired the tile placing the irid side up and think I had pretty good results.
This piece is part of a custom wall art project I am doing on commission from a customer. The glass tile is 10" in dia. and is composed of a layer of lavender, a layer of grape and the 2 stripes are irid on clear. The triangles are salmon colored dichro.
I fused the purples and the irid in 1 firing and added the dichro in a 2nd tack fuse firing.
Thanks so much for your help ! |
