Hi, Newbie here--to this forum and to stained glass. I'm just wondering about the difference in 50/50 solder and 60/40. I know the content difference, but how about workability? any preference? instances where one should use one over the other? is the solder sold at the glass suppliers any different than that at a hardware store? (meaning solid core--not rosin or acid) Thanks for any insight you can give.

60/40 sets quicker so is more likely to form a rounded bead while 50/50 is more likely to melt flat. It's for that reason, artisans often prefer 50/50 for lead and 60/40 for foil. However, the difference is so relatively small and it can be a nuisance having 2 different solders, so the majority of glass artisans use only 60/40. So much so, it's often difficult to get 50/50.
Yes (as long as it's not rosin or acid core) the hardware store solder is the same. Other then some import stuff that has numerous impurities, there is zero difference between brands of solder. The best brand to buy is the one that least lightens your wallet. _________________ Certified Master Curmudgeon |

Thanks, Dennis. I can buy 50/50 for a little under half price from a local farm store compared to a stained glass shop (60/40) I wanted a little insight before I bought a roll and did some experimenting. |

I suggest you try a roll to see if it works, and if it does work, buy all they have. Solder prices have been climibing steadily for the past year or so and are expected to continue rising. I bet your local store has some old stock that's priced based on old buying costs. If they have to order any more, their price will be a whole lot higher. _________________ Certified Master Curmudgeon |

It seems like every time I buy solder the price has gone up. Maybe looking around hardware stores might be better then getting it at a glass shop. |

I saw an item on the news last night regarding the falling price of metals. It sure would be nice if we would see that reflected sometime in the future in regard to the price of solder, came, lead, etc. I suppose I'm a pessimist because somehow I doubt it. _________________ Gary Wilkinson

I share your skepticism. I just ordered another batch of solder and in spite of the reports of declining metal prices, I was fed a story about why there was still another price increase since my last order - and a claim the price will probably increase again in a few weeks. I'm reminded of an old, and always appropriate, comment:
If you're gunna screw me, you could at least kiss me first. _________________ Certified Master Curmudgeon |
