Learn the basics of melting glass in the fire of a torch. Students will learn about the different kilns of tools and equipment used to torchwork glass and will work with HotHead torches to experiment with making stringers and beads, as well as how to manipulate and sculpt heat softened glass.
In this introductory class you will make a number of glass beads to take home with you, including single round beads, swirl beads and dotted beads. Several techniques will be discussed and demonstrated and practiced by the students. Every student will leave with all the information needed to continue bead making and perhaps, with practice, start making glass sculptures. All equipment and glass is included.
Class instruction includes:
Safe torch use
Fume ventilation requirements
Introduction to tools
Eye protection
How different makes of glass respond to heat
Importance of compatibility
Thermal shock
